Sediment Basins and Rock Dam Construction

Sediment basins and rock dams can be used to capture sediment from storm water runoff before it enters a lake.

Rock dam sediment basins are similar to sediment collection basins with earthen embankments. These damming structures are constructed of riprap and gravel. They release storm water runoff from the settling pool gradually through the spaces between the riprap.

Both structures allow a pool to form in an excavated, natural depression, or at the shallow headwaters of a lake, where sediment can settle out.
